Witnesses Sought to Serious Incident On Motorway
The Waitematä Serious Crash Unit is seeking witnesses to an incident on the Southern Motorway early this morning. A motorcyclist has been injured after being struck by a car travelling in the wrong direction.
The car carried on after the crash. It then struck a tree on the Princess Street southbound on-ramp minutes later. The male driver is now assisting police with their enquiries.
Police say the crash happened at about 1.00am this morning Friday 20 April 2012 on the sector of motorway between Redoubt Road and Otahuhu. Police received reports that the car was travelling north at speed in the southbound lanes.
The 38 year old male motorcyclist is in Middlemore Hospital. He has serious leg injuries. Lengthy surgery has been carried out this morning. His condition is described as stable.
SCU Investigating Officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed this crash. Anyone who also sighted either the motorcycle or the vehicle prior to the crash is being urged to come forward.
