Labour’s Wellington-based MPs are preparing to host a public meeting about the Government’s plan to allow for off-shore drilling in the Pegasus Basin to ensure that the public are able to have their say.

“We’re really concerned that the people of Wellington and their local representatives have not been consulted about the plan to tender for off-shore drilling in the region. This is a big decision that will affect us all. Labour believes your voice matters,” said Grant Robertson.

“That’s why we will be holding a public meeting to discuss the issue and gather feedback that we can pass on to the Government.”

"Prospecting for oil should only be approved when we are confident that we have adequate safeguards in place to protect the environment in the event of a disaster, says Annette King.

“The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is evidence of what can happen when things go wrong. We cannot afford to have something catastrophic like that happen in New Zealand.”

“We are working on setting up the meeting and will confirm the date and venue as soon as we can. In the meantime, people will be able to visit our website at www.labour.org.nz/southcoast to share their views on the proposal,” said Charles Chauvel.

“The Government may not be prepared to listen and to allow Kiwis to have their say. But Labour will make sure your voice is heard.”
