A new team has finally ended the reign of three time Asian Pastry Cup champions Singapore at this year’s event. The Australian team was crowned the 2012 winner of the Asian Pastry Cup this evening at the end of an exciting, tense and emotional two‐day competition. The teams from Malaysia and Singapore were awarded the second and third prizes respectively as hundreds of supporters cheered them on. New contender to the competition, New Zealand, rounded off the top four teams that will be heading to Lyon, France for the World Pastry Cup in 2013.

The Australian team, represented by Coach Dean Gibson and the other competitors Andre Sandison and Justin Yu, created four desserts around an aqua marine theme which even had live fishes as part of their display. They captivated the 11‐member professional jury as well as the two presidents of the Jury, Mr Gabriel Paillasson and Mr Terai Noriihiko with their plated dessert, chocolate cake, chocolate showpiece and their sugar showpiece which won the prize for the “Best Sugar Showpiece”.

Australian team coach Dean Gibson is very proud and excited to have this honour bestowed on them. He said, “All that hard work with the team was well worth it to achieve this award. We’re just glad to have done our country proud and to be able to compete with the best in the pastry world at Lyon next year.” In addition to the winning top honours and “Best Sugar Showpiece”, Australia also charmed the media panel consisting of editors and writers from Singapore’s top food publications by claiming the “Media Prize”.

Despite not having ranked in the competition, the other competitors from India, Indonesia and first time competitors Thailand held their heads high. To these teams, participating in this high‐level competition proved a fantastic opportunity to network and to learn new techniques.

The atmosphere at the Asian Pastry Cup 2012 was electrifying as the teams brought their supporters with them. They cheered from the grandstands and rushed to take photos of the beautiful desserts and showpieces as they were paraded through the stage area. Mr Vincent Bourdin, Director of the Asian Pastry Cup was very emotional at the end of the intense competition. He said, “This fourth edition of the Asian Pastry Cup has proven that Asia possesses such great talents in the pastry industry and over the years I am proud to see how this competition has evolved to the high standards of skill and showmanship as seen today. Furthermore, I would also like to thank the organising team, all our partners and sponsors as well as the students from At‐Sunrice for their generous support which have made the APC a
success.”

The top four Asian teams will now prepare to compete with teams from all over the world at the prestigious World Pastry Cup 2013 in Lyon, France on 26th and 27th January 2013 where they will meet and vie against teams from 22 nations such as France, Japan, Korea, Spain, Italy, Belgium and USA for the coveted award.

About The Asian Pastry Cup (APC)

Founded in 2006 by Valrhona and Ravifruit in partnership with Singapore Exhibition Services and the Singapore Pastry Alliance, the Asian Pastry Cup (APC) is held in conjunction with Food&HotelAsia. It is a competition within itself but also serves as the official competition at which four Asian teams are pre‐selected to compete at the World Pastry Cup in Lyon, France.

Now in its fourth year running, the Asian Pastry Cup (APC) has quickly made its mark on the Asian pastry scene after three well received biennial editions and has become a major platform for pastry professionals. This unique live competition pits pastry chefs against one another, culminating in a display of the most delightful and beautiful pastry creations.

The participating teams have prepared and presented their best pastry creations live in front of an audience and the esteemed judging panel, helmed by Mr Gabriel Paillasson, President‐Founder of World Pastry Cup, and Terai Norihiko International President of the jury
