Have Your Say on Local Events

We've developed a new draft Events Policy, and we want your thoughts on events in the capital.

We want to maintain and develop our regular iconic events - Hertz Sevens, NZ International Arts Festival, and the Brancott Estate World of WearableArt Show - and to add at least one new major event by 2016.

We also want to strengthen the regional events programme and develop a suburban-based programme. This is to ensure we have a diverse range of community-initiated events across the city and across different cultures. We're also considering spreading our events across all seasons.

All of these ideas are contained in our new draft Events Policy 2012. We want you to have your say and help Wellington retain its status as the events capital of New Zealand.

The Council's Events Portfolio Leader, Councillor John Morrison, says events are highly valued by Wellingtonians and many people believe they are what makes the city great.

"Events generate economic benefits, they attract talent and visitors to the region and provide jobs," says Cr Morrison.

"We're looking to add another major event to our programme. As an example, we could make the Cuba Carnival bigger and better or do more to commemorate Anzac Day. We have a great opportunity to look at a true Anzac partnership celebration with Australia at the stadium, especially as we build towards the Gallipoli centenary celebrations. But what we really need is ideas and feedback from the public."
