The impact of floods can cause long term damage to our roads by weakening the road structure and the embankments, causing problems well after floodwaters have receded.

An example of this kind of damage can be seen at a new washout on Ronga Road, Rai Valley, where a 30 metre section of five metre high embankment has collapsed into the Ronga River above its confluence with the Opouri River.

Marlborough District Council’s rivers staff and Marlborough Roads’ highway maintenance contractor will be repairing the washout in the next few weeks.

“Living wall” technologies will be used to reinstate the embankment; a wall of structural layers created by backfill materials with a low-maintenance, aesthetically pleasing front face.

The work is expected to take two or three weeks and motorists should expect some minor delays from time to time.
