Diverse range of events for Hamilton's Youth Week
A brave group of Hamilton’s young people will spend a weekend living in a central city shop front as part of the city’s involvement in National Youth Week.
National Youth Week runs from 19 May to 27 May, and a diverse range of events are planned for Hamilton, including 40 Hour City Survivor, which will see an Alexandra Street shop front become home for youth participants in the annual 40 Hour Famine charity event.
Other events include kickboxing classes at Fairfield Hall, Zumba work-outs, drama classes a talent quest at Southwell School, and a Youth Variety Concert at Clarence Street theatre – but it’s hip hop culture with the strongest presence during Youth Week, through a breakdancing session, graffiti art exhibition, and the Hip Hop Ya Don’t Stop Workshops (also at Clarence Street Theatre) on Saturday 26 May.
Councillor Margaret Forsyth, Council’s representative on Hamilton Youth Council, says the Youth Week events should stimulate and excite the city’s young people.
“Hamilton has one of the highest percentages of young people in the country, and the Youth Week events in the city offer a great chance for them to express themselves, make new friends, learn new skills – and most of all, have fun,” Councillor Forsyth says.
“I’d encourage Hamilton’s young people to get involved in Youth Week events and really enjoy themselves.”
A calendar of Hamilton Youth Week events is attached, the programme of events will be profiled throughout the week on Community Radio Hamilton’s Youth Week Breakfast Broadcasts (8am-10am, 1206AM and 106.7FM)
