Awards recognise youth potential

Hastings District Council will honour high performing young people during the inaugural Youth Potential awards ceremony.

The awards are designed to celebrate the achievement and success of young people in provider programmes, with a focus on youth from the Flaxmere and Camberley communities.

Nominations have been received from local youth service providers with the judging being coordinated by the Social Well Being forum. The judging panel included representatives from the Department of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Social Development, Te Puni Kokiri – Ministry of Maori Development and Hastings District Council. Awards will be made in the categories of outstanding male, female, group and ambassador.

Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The awards recognise young people who have shown commitment and dedication to the programmes which are being provided by a number of different agencies. We believe the recipients of these awards will help the district grow and inspire others to bigger and better things.”

Cynthia Bowers says “The Youth Potential ambassador award is very special. It will go to a young person the section panel believes has shown exceptional commitment to a project or given outstanding service and dedication to a provider organisation.”

The Youth Potential awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in the Hastings District Council Chambers on Monday May 21st at 6pm. The guest speakers are ex All Black and Hawke’s Bay Magpies rugby player Danny Lee and Riverslea School Principal Morris Rehu.
