Mechanical issues force extended pool closure

Hamilton’s Municipal Pools will remain closed until early June as detailed quotes are obtained for major mechanical repairs to the 100-year-old Council-owned facility.

The pools were closed last Thursday (17 May) after a mechanical failure with the facility’s pump and filtration system.

Council’s Community and Leisure Manager Deanne McManus-Emery says the repairs undertaken over the last few days have not been successful, leaving Council with little choice but to close the pools for an extended period.

“Because of the ongoing mechanical issues, the quality of the water in the pools can not be controlled to the high standards required. The health and safety of swimmers would be compromised if we re-opened the pools now,” Mrs McManus-Emery says.

Mrs McManus-Emery says the focus now shifts to determining exactly what is required to repair the pools’ pump and filter system, and obtain competitive quotes for the work.

“We are doing everything we can to get clarity on costs of the repairs necessary to meet water quality standards and be able to open the pool again to the public. We realise this closure will inconvenience Municipal Pool users, and we apologise for that, but we need to solve these mechanical problems.”
Regular Municipal Pool users are being offered alternative time slots at the Gallagher Aquatic Centre and Waterworld.
