Agricultural production tables for Federation of Māori Authorities

The information in this release of data shows the part played by the Federation of Māori Authorities (the Federation) members' farming and forestry activities in Aotearoa New Zealand's agricultural, horticultural, and forestry sector. Data comes from Statistics New Zealand’s 2011 Agricultural Production Survey.

The Federation is an incorporated society that was established in 1987. Its primary objective is the economic development of Māori. Federation members traditionally have strong interest in agricultural operations – current members have significant landholdings and agricultural operations. The results published in the tables are for the collectively owned farms and forestry blocks owned and directly managed by Federation members.

All Federation members included in the 2011 survey responded. A complete coverage of their 140 farms and exotic forestry plantations was achieved with the help of the Federation.

While over half the Federation members have farms – some large, and most being economically significant – the Federation does not represent all collectively owned Māori farms. In addition, the Agricultural Production Survey does not include substantial areas of Māori land that are administered by the Māori Trustee or by Māori collectives, and that are not developed for farming.

The predominant Federation member farm is a livestock farm with sheep, beef, and dairy cattle. While relatively few in number, Federation members do have horticultural farms that have an important presence in the country’s horticulture industry. Their products include kiwifruit, wine grapes, pip fruit, citrus, and vegetables.
