Work begins next Tuesday (29 May) to change a section of Pendarves Street into an area that encourages more people to walk, cycle and play on the street.

The eight-week project will see the installation of traffic-calming features – such as chicanes and raised thresholds – as well as seats and extensive planting on the section of Pendarves between Liardet and Gover streets. Some existing parking spaces will be removed and other spaces will change from all-day parking to short-term.

Let’s Go Project Manager Carl Whittleston says the streetscape will be a model street for encouraging people out of their homes and to use their street as a community space.

“With the traffic slowed down, people will be encouraged to walk and cycle more and it will also be safer for the children who attend Central School,” he says.

“In addition, the streetscape will beautify the area and celebrates the street’s proximity to Pukekura Park and the TSB Bank Festival of the Lights.”

Construction will take place from 7am to 6pm Mondays to Fridays, although some concreting work might be required on Saturday mornings depending on the weather and the project’s progress.

During the construction period, pedestrian access will be limited to the south side of the street and no through-traffic or on-road parking will be possible. Residents and their visitors will still have vehicle access to their homes, and Central School will use Lemon Street as its main entrance during this time.

A letter has been delivered to affected residents to keep them informed of progress.
