Android users can now experience the popular Countdown grocery shopping app, which allows customers to access their local Countdown supermarket in the palm of their hand.

The free app has already received more than 45,000 downloads for iPhone since its launch on 11 May, and is now available for download on Google Play, the Android platform.

The app is a New Zealand-first offering combining a digital shopping list with barcode scanning capability, prices, recipes and an online shopping function.

Bridget Lamont, General Manager of Marketing at Countdown, said the popularity of the app on iPhone in the first two weeks had exceeded expectations.

“It’s clear that many of our customers are tech-savvy shoppers, and the feedback about our mobile phone application has been hugely positive,” Ms Lamont said.

“We’re excited to bring our app to an even wider audience and allow more of our customers to experience mobile-assisted shopping.”

The app provides an aisle-ordered shopping list that synchronised with your preferred store, making it easier to find products on supermarket shelves.

“It will even let you know how much your shopping will cost** before you leave the house, which is a great tool for budgeting,” said Ms Lamont.

Countdown app users will be able to use the scanner function to scan the barcodes of used products from their pantry before they throw them away, automatically adding them to their shopping list.

Other useful functions include a link to Countdown’s rewards programme where customers can check their Onecard points balance and mySpecials, which tells them when the products they frequently buy are on special.  Customers can even access the latest Countdown mailer.

The recipe function on the app allows customers to access a range of recipes and then easily add ingredients to their shopping lists.

With the checkout function, customers can opt to have groceries delivered straight to their home via Countdown’s online shopping service. “It’s like having a personal grocery shopper in your back pocket,” Ms Lamont added.

Ms Lamont said Countdown welcomed feedback on how to improve the app offering. “We’re always looking at ways to help our customers shop more efficiently, and feedback from our customers is the best way to do that. It’s exciting to be bringing our customers on the journey to the future of supermarket shopping.”
