Students Learn Scooter Skills
Scooting to school is about to get safer for a group of primary school students.
This week, NPDC’s Let’s Go programme is training St Joseph’s School students on how to ride scooters safely.
“This is a first for Taranaki and possibly for New Zealand,” says Sustainable Transport Coordinator Nathaniel Benefield.
“We deliver cycle skills training to years five and six, but we saw a need for younger children to get some training on how to be on our roads and pathways safely.
“We know through our surveys and work with schools that scooters are becoming increasingly popular, and more and more children are scooting to school.
“The skills these young students learn on scooters will be easily transferred to bike-riding when they’re older.”
The three 90-minute sessions covers helmet checks, stopping, sneaky driveways, pedestrian priority/right of way, and general awareness on scooters.
Mr Benefield expects this programme will be introduced to other schools around the district.
