Environment Canterbury Commissioners approved the draft Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) today at their council meeting today. It will now go to consultation from 23 June to 27 July 2012.

“Once the consultation period is finished, hearings will follow in August and we hope to have the revised plan available for final consideration by council in September,” says Environment Canterbury Commissioner David Bedford.

The RPTP takes into account the need to carry out design reviews in Christchurch and Timaru.

David Bedford says a look at the public transport network in Christchurch in particular is needed, following the series of earthquakes in 2011 that caused major damage to the city centre and a number of suburbs.

Allowing community transport services to be established is another focus of the RPTP. This will involve working with communities to determine the best outcome for local public transport issues.
