For the first time Franklin District Council has collected over 200 tonnes of recycling in the kerbside collection that operates in the three main town centres. This record is all due to Franklin residents who have taken hold of the idea of recycling since it was introduced at the beginning of 2006.

“In April 2006, the first full month of kerbside recycling, we collected just over 97 tonnes of recycling. That means Franklin has more than doubled the amount of recycling through the kerbside collection in under two years! Well done to all residents who are recycling,” says Franklin District Council’s Solid Waste Manager, Nigel Birse.

212.6 tonnes were collected in October through the kerbside collection. Add to this the recycling that happens through the transfer stations and the rural recycling drop off areas and the District as a whole is doing a great job at recycling.

“Every item that is recycled has an immediate impact on reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills,” says Nigel.

You can recycle glass, aluminium and steel cans, plastics (1, 2, 5 & 7) in your blue kerbside recycling bin if you live within Pukekohe, Waiuku and Tuakau townships. Paper and cardboard should be tied in a bundle, or boxed beside your recycle bin. For no extra collection fee (bins do cost $12 to buy) you can have up to three recycling bins, please contact Council if you would like to order another bin – 09 237 1300.
