Candidates in the Wainuiomata Community Board by-election have been congratulated by Mayor Ray Wallace for stepping up and participating in the democratic process.

A by-election for the board closed on Wednesday (June 13)  with Samantha Scott gaining 1056 votes according to provisional results, Carolyn Nimmo 554, Michael Grigg 549, and Deborah McIvor 508.

“All of the candidates who put their names forward did extremely well ,” he said.  “The by-election was very important and gave the community a choice on who should represent their interests.

“The turnout at around 22 per cent was down on what I had hoped, but the community indicated a clear preference for the successful candidate and Samantha will now take her place on the community board once the vote is finalised,” he said.

“The full council relies on a clear voice from the boards and committees to ensure we are making decisions based on the needs of our citizens,” he said.
