The drop in numbers of people using the Marlborough District Library on a Thursday night has prompted the library to discontinue its late night opening.

The Blenheim and Picton libraries are now open seven days, with Sundays proving very popular with families. The number of issues in three hours on a Sunday afternoon makes this the busiest three hours of the week.

For more than 35 years, the library in Blenheim has had a 7.00 pm-8.00 pm late night.

However, as the library has extended its weekend opening times, more and more people are choosing to visit in daytime hours.

Sometimes as few as 10 readers come through the doors on a Thursday night, and that number drops even lower during winter, said Marlborough District Libraries Manager Glenn Webster.

As from 1 July 2012, the Marlborough District Library will close at 6.00 pm during the week, and along with Picton Library and Service Centre, will open from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays and 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm on Sundays.
