A refreshed Wellington Regional Strategy (WRS) was today approved by the WRS Committee. The aim of the WRS is to build a resilient and diverse economy that retains and creates jobs, supports the growth of high value companies and improves the relative regional position in relation to New Zealand’s GDP and national employment.

The refreshed strategy has six focus areas: commercialisation of innovation; investment mechanisms for growth; building world class economic infrastructure; attracting business, investment and talent to the region; education and workforce development to service regional economy needs; and open for business.

This strategy will provide focus for the WRS Committee and for the regional economic development agency Grow Wellington.

Background information

The WRS Committee is a committee of Greater Wellington Regional Council. It comprises Greater Wellington’s Chair and six of the region’s eight mayors, as well as four non-local government members. The WRS Committee has an independent chair, Sir John Anderson.

Established in May 2007, this committee was required to be reviewed after five years. That task was recently completed by the committee, following a report prepared by consultants MartinJenkins. Those review findings contributed to the refreshment of the Strategy.
