Kapiti Police are continuing to investigate an arson attack on a large container on a vacant section in Ihakara Street at the weekend.

Officer in charge of Kapiti Police Senior Sergeant Alasdair Macmillan says at around 1am on Sunday 1 July, Police were called by the Fire Service to a container that was on fire in the western extension of Ihakara Street, near the Telstra Clear building.

"A scene examination revealed two fires were deliberately lit on the outside of the container. The container hadn't been entered by the offender/s, however the intense heat of the fire caused the contents to ignite."

Senior Sergeant Macmillan says the contents of the container consisted of mainly builders' tools. The estimated value of the damage is over $10,000.

"We have been working closely with the owner, who is now considering offering a reward to anyone who can supply information which leads to the prosecution of the person or people responsible for the arson."

Anyone with any information should contact Kapiti Police on (04) 296 6800 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
