Seven new street lights will cast bright white light along Alfred Street, improving night-time visibility and security in the area.

There’s always been a problem with lighting on what is becoming an increasingly busy road. Two very old concrete light poles have now been removed and, for the first time, new street lights have been installed on the north side of Alfred Street outside Blenheim School, along with replacement lights on the south side of the street.

It means the pedestrian crossing between the clubs’ complex and the Alfred Street parking building and the entrances to the parking building will be well illuminated, increasing safety for everyone using the area at night.

Councillor Terry Sloan, deputy chair of Council’s Assets and Services Committee, says that after trialling a range of options, energy efficient halide lamps were chosen. Unlike the old yellow sodium lamps, they cast a white light that will make the area brighter at night for drivers and pedestrians.
