  • Have regular eyesight and hearing checks
  • Stay physically fit to keep good control of the steering wheel
  • Plan trips well in advance - try to avoid peak traffic and bad weather
  • Avoid driver fatigue by taking frequent breaks and not driving at night
  • Be a safe driver - scan the road and allow time to react to the unexpected
  • Check with your GP about the effect on driving of your medication
  • Remember the effect of alcohol is magnified by certain types of medication
  • Be aware even a small amount of alcohol can slow reactions, reduce concentration and impair judgement - skills which decline with age
  • Remember that courtesy crossings are ‘shared space’ and rely on the courtesy of both drivers and pedestrians. Responsibility rests with pedestrians to make eye contact with approaching drivers and check they are slowing down before stepping out from the kerb.

A free seminar day on driving, mobility scooters and pedestrian safety is being held at St Christopher’s Church Hall in Redwoodtown on Thursday 19 July from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm. For more information, Ph: Wendy, 03 579 4446.
