Hutt Valley Police are investigating an assault of a man in Naenae around 10pm last night.

Detective Constable Ryan Chinnock of the Hutt Valley CIB says the victim, aged in his early 20's, was walking home after finishing work at a local shop in the Naenae shopping centre.

"As the victim was walking behind the Naenae swimming pool he was approached by a group of approximately four men and assaulted with what is believed to be a bottle."

As a result, the victim was left lying on the ground unconscious for a period of time before being discovered by a passer-by. The male suffered lacerations to his face and was admitted to hospital.

Detective Constable Chinnock says the four male offenders were described as Maori, in their early 20's, wearing dark clothing.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area last night, or who may have witnessed this assault."

Anyone with any information should contact the Lower Hutt Police Station on (04) 560 2600 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
