Active Communities Strategy up for review
Ensuring Hamiltonians are active and healthy is the focus of the Active Communities Strategy, which is currently being reviewed.
The strategy is a collaborative project involving Hamilton City Council, Sport Waikato, Sport New Zealand, Ministry of Education, Wintec, University of Waikato, and a number of other organisations with an interest in Hamilton’s sport and recreation sector.
It was formulated in 2009, and aims to motivate the city’s residents to be active, engage in sport and physical recreation, and develop more collaboration between partner organisations.
Councillor Dave Macpherson, one of Hamilton City Council’s representatives in the project, says with approximately 250 sports and leisure clubs in the city and surrounding sub-region, Hamilton is already an active city.
“Council provides and maintains parks, sports fields and leisure facilities throughout the city, and they are vital for keeping our residents active, fit and healthy,” Cr Macpherson says.
“This strategy complements those facilities, and encourages people get out and about, get their bodies moving and blood pumping through their veins. Now we’d like to hear what the public have to say, so we can update this strategy for the future.”
A public meeting during which residents can share their views is scheduled for Council’s ground floor reception lounge on Thursday, 19 July, starting at 5.30pm.
