The Canterbury Water Regional Committee will meet in Wigram for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, 10 July.

The committee will begin the meeting by discussing the social and economic aspects of the implementation of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS). The committee will be briefed on the progress of a committee sub-group and consider its recommendations.

Next, the committee will discuss and provide feedback on Environment Canterbury’s draft Regional River Gravel Management Strategy. Environment Canterbury released its strategy in May for the public to provide feedback before the end of June.

Extracted gravel will play an important part in the rebuild of Christchurch and the strategy aims to ensure river gravel extraction is sustainably managed throughout Canterbury. The committee will consider the strategy in the context of the CWMS and its Regional Implementation Programme (RIP) for water management.

The committee will then discuss the regionally significant features in Orari-Opihi-Pareora, Upper Waitaki, and Lower Waitaki Zones, in a workshop session to build on previous work.

At the meeting the committee will also hear from the Canterbury District Health Board which will highlight the key topics relating to health in the context of the CWMS.

Another focus for the committee will be on Environment Canterbury’s draft Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP). The committee will further discuss the development of the draft plan by Environment Canterbury, and consider any additional recommendations as necessary.

The purpose of the LWRP is to identify the resource management outcomes or goals for managing land and water resources in Canterbury to achieve the purpose of the Resource Management Act (1991) (RMA). The plan also provides a key context for the delivery of the CWMS.

The committee will end the meeting by discussing the scope of regional water supply and distribution infrastructure before going on to discuss its work programme towards developing a second generation RIP.

The meeting at Wigram Manor begins at 3pm and it is open to members of the public.
