The Tour de iWay cycle event will mark the official opening of the Hastings District Council’s latest addition to the iWay walking and cycling network.

The Hastings to Havelock North link is the third of four major arterials to be constructed under the iWay banner. Work began on the three metre wide, offroad pathway on the northern side of Havelock Road in February 2012. The pathway begins between the outskirts of the city and St Georges Road and extends to the bridge over the Karamu Stream. It features a 400 metre long boardwalk over an open drain at the bridge end of the pathway.

The official opening on Sunday 29th July will include a ribbon cutting ceremony which will be followed by the short Tour de iWay. The cycle event will take riders around an eight kilometre loop from Strawberry Patch on Havelock Road, through Havelock North and out into the rural area, before finishing back at the start point on the newly opened walkway. It will be mostly off road and will take about 40 minutes to complete.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The official opening of this walkway marks a milestone for the iWay project. Havelock Road plays an important role in the city’s transport network and it is imperative that this road is made as safe as possible for drivers, cyclists and walkers.”

“The concrete walkway, boardwalk and landscaping is a huge boost to the district’s walking and cycling network. It will not only make things much easier for walkers and cyclists to travel between Havelock North and the Hastings CBD but also make this section of road something everyone can be proud of.”

The public is invited to take part in the Tour de iWay from 10.30am on Sunday 29th,July. The official opening will be performed on the pathway outside Strawberry Patch on Havelock Road and the tour will be followed by a lucky prize draw at midday, as well as entertainment and giveaways for the kids. Classic Hits’ Martin and Sarah will help get the opening underway. Two brand new bikes are included in the prize list.

The official opening and ribbon cutting will be performed by Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule.
