HazardCo, health and safety providers to the construction industry, and Plus4 Insurance Solutions (Plus4), a national insurance broking and financial adviser group, have entered a partnership to lower the cost of accident insurance and provide income protection cover for the self-employed working in the building trade.

The partnership enables HazardCo’s members access to a Plus4 adviser to review their accident compensation and insurance cover. Already this has resulted in significant savings and better cover for many working in the construction sector. HazardCo currently works with some 8,500 businesses nationwide engaged in the building and construction sector and related trades.

HazardCo’s managing director Mark Potter said, “By joining Hazardco and having a recognised Health and Safety programme in place, some of our clients are eligible for a 10% discount on their ACC Work Place Cover Levy which is not insignificant. However, working with Plus4 we found that many of our self-employed members could restructure their insurance cover to make it more relevant to their actual circumstances for substantially less money and, in some cases, save over $4,000 per year.”

ACC’s CoverPlus Extra enables self-employed or non-PAYE shareholder-employees to tailor their ACC cover to suit their circumstances. This flexibility means they may be able to reduce the cost of their ACC and use the savings to take out additional income protection and health insurance.

Plus4 chairman Grant Uridge said, “ACC only covers accidents whereas income protection insurance means the insured is covered if they suffer from an accident, illness or progressive disease that prevents them from being able to work for a period. While each person’s circumstances differ, many of those Plus4 advise find that we can put in place better cover for no more than they are currently spending.”

HazardCo’s Mark Potter said, “Our primary goal is to help clients prevent accidents in the first place. However, those working in the construction industry require appropriate ACC cover and insurance to protect them should an accident or illness prevent them from working. The partnership with Plus4 has meant that many of our clients have made substantial savings on the cost of their ACC and, as a result, now have in place more comprehensive and appropriate insurance cover. This has been a win all round.”
