A new operator will take over the running of the cafe and adjoining function room at Hamilton Gardens following the expiry of the current lease in September.

Hamilton City Council has awarded Kerr and Ladbrook Catering the five year lease, with a right of renewal of five years. They also own The Ferrybank wedding and conference centre, Pumice cafe and bistro and operate out-catering in Hamilton.

Five responses to requests for expressions of interest to operate the cafe were received, with Kerr and Ladbrook Catering selected as part of the procurement process.

The existing cafe and function room will undergo a refurbishment before reopening, with this funded by both the new cafe operator and Council. The facility will have similar opening hours, as well as offering catering for weddings, corporate functions, and during special events held at the Gardens.

Community General Manager Lance Vervoort says the new cafe is expected to be up and running by December, following refurbishment.

“We are pleased to award this contract to Kerr and Ladbrook who have a strong background in hospitality in the city. The world class Hamilton Gardens is the region’s most popular tourist attraction with visitors often keen to enjoy refreshments in the attractive cafe setting alongside Turtle Lake.

“Thanks also to the current operators of the Garden Terrace Restaurant who have operated the cafe for the past 12 years.”
