Labour is offering its sincere condolences to the family, friends and many fans of New Zealand author Margaret Mahy, who passed away yesterday.

“Margaret Mahy had a remarkable talent. She wrote her first story at the age of seven and has enthralled lots of Kiwi children and young adults ever since with her supernatural tales and stories about human relationships,” said David Shearer.

“I used to read her book The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate to my children. They loved it as do the many children around the world who are committed fans of Margaret Mahy’s stories.

“We regret and mourn Margaret Mahy’s passing but we celebrate her life and contribution to New Zealand. Her many works will be her legacy.”
