New iWay pathway officially opens Sunday
The new iWay pathway on the northern side of Havelock Road will be officially opened this Sunday 29th July.
The 3 metre wide pathway begins between the outskirts of the city and St Georges Road and extends to the bridge over the Karamu Stream.
The official opening at Strawberry Patch on Havelock Road will include a blessing, the ribbon cutting by Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule and the Tour de iWay, an 8km cycle event for all the family.
Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The Tour de iWay will be a great way to celebrate the completion of this link in the iWay project. Participants will ride along both on and off road cycle lanes, and the route will be well marshalled to ensure it is safe for younger children.”
Cynthia Bowers says “There has never been a better time to get on your bike and ride part of the 108 kilometres of on and off road pathways which have been created around Hastings. Spring is just around the corner and we expect to see a large increase in the number of people taking to their bikes and riding the Havelock Road pathway.”
Everyone is invited to bring their family and bikes to the official opening ceremony. The Tour de iWay bike ride will take cyclists from Strawberry Patch, through Havelock North and out into the rural area before returning along Ada Street, Windsor Avenue and finishing back at Strawberry Patch for the prizegiving.
At the end of the ride, the Classic Hits breakfast team will have loads of giveaways including two super deluxe cruiser bikes, vouchers for coffee and ice creams, meal vouchers from Off the Track restaurant and iWay t-shirts.
All participants are asked to park in Havelock North as there will be no carparking for Tour de iWay participants at Strawberry Patch. The opening ceremony will begin at about 10.50am on Sunday 29th July and the Tour de iWay will follow. The prizegiving is scheduled to start around 12 noon.
