With major construction continuing at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton City Council has lowered the speed limit on the Pembroke Street hill alongside the campus.

Council’s General Manager City Infrastructure Chris Allen said the hospital’s extensive work programme will require installation of a 37-metre footbridge across Pembroke Street in October, and in the interests of safety the new reduced speed limit of 30 km/h would be in force from Monday, 30 July.

“With considerable activity in the area, and the need for large construction vehicles to get into the site, a lowered speed limit for this section of Pembroke Street is a prudent and sensible measure,” Mr Allen says.
The work also requires the removal of 17 car parks from the same section of Pembroke Street.

Waikato DHB Chief Operating Officer Jan Adams said the building programme at Waikato Hospital was at its peak and she appreciated the construction activity impacted on both the public and staff.

"I'd like to thank the public for their ongoing support. We have planned well for this, there is ample car parking in our two car park buildings and we encourage the public to use those facilities when they come to the hospital.

"In addition we have a number of bus services running both through our campus and along Pembroke St which the public can use."
