Fairness and equality for all New Zealand couples is at the heart of my Member’s Bill, says Labour MP Louisa Wall.

The Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill was drawn from the Parliamentary Members Ballot today along with three other bills sponsored by Labour MPs.

“It is about ensuring all New Zealanders have the same rights under the law,” Louisa Wall said.

“Marriage equality is now on the international agenda. It’s a conversation which is happening in the United States, in Australia and the United Kingdom. US President Barack Obama has made the issue a foundation of his own Presidential campaign and our own Prime Minister has voiced his support for the debate.

“This Bill is based on the premise that everyone should have equal opportunity to recognise their relationship within the social and legal institution of marriage. It will ensure that all New Zealanders have the right to marry regardless of their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.

This is a conscience issue meaning MPs will vote individually rather than in Party blocks.

“I look forward to all New Zealanders being able to contribute to this discussion,” Louisa Wall said.
