Immigration scam victims need protection

Victims of a Tongan immigration scam need to be assured that they will not be shipped out on the next flight available if they come forward to assist the authorities with their investigations.

Labour’s spokesperson on Immigration, Darien Fenton says “People caught up in immigration scams are normally innocent victims. If they are prepared to help bring offenders to justice, then the Government should play its part by making sure they can come forward without fear of being immediately deported, by offering sanction-free days.”

“Sanction-free days would give victims comfort that they are safe to complain, during which time they could receive sensible advice from Immigration NZ on lawful options and a pathway forward for those caught in the scam.”

Labour’s Pacific Island Affairs Spokesperson, Su’a William Sio says without an absolute guarantee from the Minister of Immigration that victims of immigration scams will be protected, the police and immigration authorities will find it extremely difficult to collect evidence.

“These low-life scam artists target vulnerable families.  They must face the full force of the law, and without the help of victims, that won’t happen.”

Speaking at a community meeting held at the Mt Roskill’s Tongan Methodist Church this morning, Su’a William Sio said, “many of these schemes involve people from our own communities and I have no sympathy for anyone swindling vulnerable families.”

“They must be stopped, and I hope the Government will take the necessary action to help protect the victims.”
