Most evening classes have relatively modest aims, but the council-sponsored Simply Makes Cents workshops promise lifechanging skills.

“These classes are about taking control of your life,” says organiser Natalie Hormann, a sustainable living tutor. “They aim to allow participants to become more self-sufficient and live more frugally. That means more choices, more free time and better health – for participants and the planet.”

The classes run on Thursdays from 7.30pm till 9.30pm at the WelTec campus in Petone and cover four key areas:

Gardening: In this section, establishing a free food garden is explained, along with organic pest and weed control, improving soil, companion planting, permaculture principles and building a raised garden.

Zero waste: Waste-conscious buying habits, understanding recycling and cutting shopping costs are among the topics covered here.

Green food choices: This explores how to eat healthily on a budget and avoid food additives, plus how to make bread, yoghurt, cheeses and preserves.

Composting: How to build and maintain a compost, controlling vermin, worm farming and composting additives are among the topics explained in this area.

To book, ring 021 038 1665 or email Natalie@therabbithole.co.nz. The cost is $5 per workshop. Workshops run till September 13.
