There will be more opportunity to recycle in public places as a result of Christchurch City Council’s successful application to the Recycling in Public Places Project.

Prime Minister Helen Clark announced today that the Christchurch City Council is one of four councils that will receive funding from the Government’s Recycling in Public Places Project.

The funding will allow recycling bins to be installed and serviced in public places such as the City Mall and Botanic Gardens.

Council Senior Resource Planner Diane Shelander says this project represents the first step in a City-wide programme to provide opportunities to recycle in public places.

“Not only will this help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, but just as importantly, it will raise public awareness about the need to recycle and live sustainably”.

The bins will be progressively phased in around the City over the next two years, beginning as part of the redevelopment of City Mall.
