Annual Number of Work Stoppages Drops

Forty-two work stoppages ended in the December 2006 year, Statistics New Zealand said today. This compares with 60 stoppages for the December 2005 year. Stoppages in the December 2006 year involved fewer employees (9,995) and a lower number of person-days of work lost (27,671) than the December 2005 year, but had a greater estimated loss of wages and salaries ($5.2 million).

In comparison, the 60 stoppages in the December 2005 year involved 17,752 employees, and losses of 30,029 person-days of work and an estimated $4.8 million in wages and salaries.

There were 31 complete strikes, 10 partial strikes and one lockout which ended in the December 2006 year.

The manufacturing industry had the highest number of stoppages in the December 2006 year, with 13 of the 42 stoppages (31 percent). However, the health and community services industry had the highest number of employees involved (contributing 35 percent of the total), the greatest loss of person days of work (contributing 42 percent of the total), and the greatest loss of wages and salaries (contributing 53 percent of the total).

In the December 2006 quarter, 11 work stoppages ended – seven complete strikes and four partial strikes. These involved 3,688 employees, with losses of 7,698 person-days of work and an estimated $1.4 million in wages and salaries. There was one ongoing work stoppage at 31 December 2006.
