Horizons monitoring eruption impact

Last night's eruption at Mt Tongariro has resulted in ash fall in the central part of the North Island.

The full extent of the eruption is yet to be confirmed by GNS scientists and DOC staff. However Horizons Regional Council's emergency manager Shane Bayley does not expect the impact of this event to be significant to the majority of residents in the Region.

"Based on what we know about the current level of activity and wind direction we are expecting ash to move in an easterly direction away from our region."

Mr Bayley advises people living in the immediate area or down wind in affected areas to protect their water supplies by disconnecting rain water tanks.

"Ash can find its way into rain water tanks and contaminate supplies. We advise residents in the affected areas to disconnect these if it is safe for them to do so."

People intending on traveling through the area are advised that roads may be affected and to check their routes before traveling. Flights are also affected in some areas.

New Zealand Police are leading the response in partnership with other agencies.

Horizons will continue to support the response and update residents in the Region as necessary.
