More Kiwis Fly on Overseas Trips

New Zealand residents departed on 132,400 short-term overseas trips in March 2007, an increase of 8,800 (7 percent) on March 2006, Statistics New Zealand said today. There were more trips to Australia and China, as well as to a number of Pacific island countries, including New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, Fiji and Samoa. The increase to Fiji was the first since September 2006, when compared with the same month of the previous year.

In the year ended March 2007, there were 1.879 million New Zealand resident short-term departures, up on 1.868 million departures the previous March year.

There were 239,200 visitor arrivals in March 2007, up 5 percent on the 227,000 arrivals in March 2006. More visitors arrived from Australia, the United Kingdom, China and South Africa. There were fewer visitor arrivals from Japan and the United States.

There were 2.445 million visitor arrivals in the March 2007 year, with more visitors from Australia (up 43,300) and China (up 23,600), but fewer from Japan (down 23,100).

Permanent and long-term (PLT) departures exceeded arrivals by 1,000 in March 2007, compared with a zero net PLT migration balance in March 2006. The net PLT outflow to Australia was 2,800 in March 2007, up on 1,700 in the previous March. On a seasonally adjusted basis, there was a net PLT inflow of 600 in March 2007.

In the March 2007 year, there was a net PLT inflow of 12,100, up on the net gain of 9,700 in the March 2006 year. Annual net PLT migration had reached 14,800 in the year ended November 2006, but has since eased.
