Work is underway in Christchurch’s Port Hills to assess the condition of the stormwater drainage network following the recent earthquakes.

The Christchurch City Council is undertaking a visual assessment of the entire network, including culverts, drains and watercourses, says the Council’s City Environment General Manager Jane Parfitt.

“This work is being carried out by teams of two from Opus and City Care and is part of the wider land drainage recovery programme that the Council has put in place to assess the impact of land damage from the earthquakes on the city’s land drainage network.”

She says to complete the Port Hills assessment the Council’s contractors will be assessing private properties to check drains, culverts and watercourses from Taylor’s Mistake through to Kennedy’s Bush and the inhabited areas along the north-western rim of Lyttelton Harbour.

This work will be completed during the next three to four months.

“Completion of the investigations will enable the Council to develop a prioritised programme of remedial works to address any damage, in particular to mitigate any risk of erosion and flooding arising from damage to the network.”
