A majority of people in the Wellington region want no change to current local government boundaries, a survey has found.

The Colmar Brunton telephone survey of 3,300 adults – or 400 in each council area – found that 58 per cent of respondents were happy with the status quo, though many wanted better sharing of services among councils.

Of the remaining respondents, 12 per cent favoured a merger of the nine regional, district and local councils into three groupings, while 9 per cent favoured a merger into two groupings, and a further 9 per cent favoured a single super-city entity. Two per cent favoured other change options, and 10 per cent were undecided.

Hutt City Council is now preparing a discussion document based on the survey results, along with a questionnaire, which it will distribute to every household in the city next month.
