Relief for visitors at Ahu Ahu Beach Reserve has turned out to be short-lived, with vandalism leading to the removal of a Portaloo.

After a large slip at the reserve on 20 August destroyed the public toilets, the Council installed the Portaloo while it looked at options for a permanent replacement.

However during last weekend the Portaloo was rammed into the cliff by a car.

“As vandalism goes, this one was pretty violent,” says Manager Parks Operations Stuart Robertson. “We’re just glad there was no one in the facility when it was hit.

“However it’s frustrating to see our efforts to help the public are being undermined by such thoughtless vandalism. It occurs throughout the district’s parks and reserves and it means we’re spending thousands of dollars on repairs that could instead go into maintenance or beautification.”

The Portaloo will not be replaced at Ahu Ahu.
