A longtime marketing lecturer and head of The University of Auckland Business School’s Department of Marketing has been honoured for his contributions to the profession in New Zealand.

Professor Rod Brodie, who joined The University of Auckland as Professor of Marketing and Head of Department in 1988, has been inducted into the New Zealand Marketing Hall of Fame at the TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards.

Professor Brodie – instrumental in setting up the Business School’s acclaimed Department of Marketing – was recognised for his commitment and contribution to the marketing profession in New Zealand and internationally since joining the University.

He has been accredited for ensuring the department has excelled in world-class refereed research, global reputation for quality teaching, and meaningful engagement with business and professional communities.

Professor Brodie said it was a great honour to receive the accolade, particularly as it enabled him to join five of his marketing colleagues in the Hall of Fame – Associate Professor Richard Brookes, Mike Groves, David Innes, Tom Agee and Steve Bridges.

Nominator Mike Groves says Professor Brodie has succeeded in bringing all his goals to fruition. A researcher of world recognition, he has published 80 articles in refereed journals, contributed to nine books, supervised 40 theses and won a host of international accolades including a spot on the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing.

“Rod is a natural leader who has over the years mentored numerous staff and students who have gone on to excel locally and internationally. He has instinctively drawn the best out of them, has encouraged them to be the best they can be, and has celebrated their successes genuinely and unselfishly,” Mr Groves says.

“His presence in the Hall of Fame ranks will add lustre and mana to the profession. My nomination of Rod was supported by every single member of the Hall of Fame, which is itself a huge compliment and sign of Rod’s high standing.”

Mr Groves says Professor Brodie, who is the first person from the Southern Hemisphere elected a Fellow of the European Marketing Academy and recently elected fellowship in the Chartered Institute of marketing, completed a PhD in marketing in 1982, at a time when marketing was hardly recognised as an academic discipline, and was still in its infancy as a business discipline.

“Through his research, teaching and leadership, Rod has contributed hugely to the marketing profession, to the great benefit of our economy. He has always had a specific interest in market research and has contributed strongly to the acceptance and understanding of market research.”
