BAY OF PLENTY

UK based qualification body City & Guilds has awarded two one-year full-time scholarships to Hospitality students from Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. A total of 20 bursaries were awarded internationally for 2013 of which New Zealand secured four.

First year Polytechnic hospitality students Amy Edwards and Hemi Lenoel were awarded scholarships worth in excess of $5,500 each which will cover their tuition and assessment fees for the second year of their studies which will see them graduate with a National Certificate in Hospitality (Professional Cookery)  Level 4 in 2013.

“I am extremely excited about the scholarship and the opportunity it gives me to return to the Polytechnic and advance my culinary arts skills,” says Amy. “I have been phoning my family to tell them about the amazing news!”

To be eligible for the bursaries, students have to apply in writing followed by an online interview. City & Guilds in the UK then selects the winners based on their workmanship and commitment to training and success. After the completion of their course, students will also be awarded with a City & Guilds Diploma in Culinary Arts.

The City & Guilds Scholarships are highly regarded internationally and Julie Kerry, Polytechnic Group Leader for Tourism, Travel and Hospitality says it is a great opportunity for the young students.

“It allows our students to add the internationally recognised City & Guilds Diploma in Culinary Arts to their portfolio,” says Julie. “A qualification with an international reputation is very beneficial when students gain work opportunities overseas.”
