Cell Phone Thefts - Police Issue Alert
Recent incidents of cell phone thefts have prompted Police in the Waitematä District to issue an alert advising users to take proactive measures against such a loss.
Police say that consumers are embracing the sophisticated technology of modern cell phones and the value of such items is making them attractive to opportunist offenders.
Waitematä District Crime Prevention Manager, Inspector Gary Hill says the most common cause of loss is where victims forget that they have left their cell phone in a public place. In three incidents at the weekend, victims left their cell phones on the counter or table at cafes or restaurants.
“On one occasion a male victim left his cell phone on the café counter while he was selecting a table. Within minutes the victim realised his oversight but it was too late.”
“In Glen Mall two teenagers accosted a 13 year old boy and snatched his new I – phone.”
“These incidents are a timely reminder to all cell phone users to keep items such as cell phones hidden from view and to exercise caution when using them in public. Always be mindful of those who are in close proximity. Ensure the cell phone is locked to prevent others being able to use it.”
“Parents are advised to educate their children on how to take security measures related to use of their cell phone and to their personal safety. If anyone has experienced the loss of their cell phone as a result of theft, robbery or burglary, call police without hesitation,” Inspector Hill said.
