BAY OF PLENTY

Local student radio station, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s SubFM, is hosting a Radiothon from midday on Monday, 17 September through to midday Tuesday, 18 September to help raise funds to send more carpentry students down to Christchurch to help out.

The Polytechnic’s carpentry team of tutors and students have now made several trips down to the shaken city working with Habitat for Humanity’s Christchurch Earthquake Rebuild Volunteer Project helping out families in need by making their homes liveable again.

Adrian Maidment, programme coordinator on the radio programme said he was really impressed listening to carpentry tutor Dirk de Vries talk about his experiences in Christchurch.

“When I explained the project that the carpentry students were doing, my students immediately wanted to get involved,” says Adrian. “It’s a small way for us in Tauranga to help Christchurch rebuild. By providing financial assistance to help get our carpentry students down to Christchurch, it helps both the people of Christchurch to rebuild their lives and gives the students valuable real world experience.”

Laura McCabe, one of the radio student involved in the Radiothon said “This is a really great way for Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students and local businesses to help support Christchurch and our carpentry students.”

The Radiothon will feature a line up of events including on air shows and in studio entertainment as well as on campus events. The radio students will be out about collecting with buckets throughout the Polytechnic campuses and in the CBD on Monday and Tuesday.
