Fresh from a win in Otago’s Tour de Taieri Sam Horgan leads a strong line-up entered by SUBWAY® Pro Cycling in the Taupo to Napier Classic cycle race on Saturday.

Horgan, the current Oceania elite TT and Tour of Canterbury champion, plans to back up from Saturday and race in the Wanganui Cycling Grand Prix the following day as he continues a build up towards the Powernet Tour of Southland that starts late next month.

Horgan will be joined by SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Matt Gorter, Simon Binney, Scott Creighton and Nick Lovegrove on Saturday. Lovegrove is also backing up in Wanganui on Sunday as he looks to push his way into contention for selection for the Southland Tour.

Lovegrove has been travelling overseas during the New Zealand winter after getting married but started training in Europe in July. The Aucklander had some good results last summer including winning the elite section of the Grape Ride in April. Tauranga based Binney is the current National Under 23 Club Champion and has just returned from racing in the Tour of New Caledonian. Creighton has spent most of the Kiwi winter riding for the BikeNZ Under 23 national team in Europe.

The team is looking to make a real impact at the Powernet Tour of Southland in early November as it continues to search for a new naming rights sponsor after SUBWAY® Restaurants announced last month it was ending its eight year sponsorship of the team. SUBWAY® Pro Cycling will operate as scheduled until the end of 2012 with the Armstrong Motor Group Festival of Cycling in Christchurch on the 1st and 2nd of December being its last official event.
