The iWay Market Ride will be a feature of the official opening of the new Hastings – Clive pathway.

The nine kilometre pathway is the fourth arterial to be constructed in the iWay walking and cycling network around Hastings. The path begins on-road near the Hastings CBD and then goes off-road at the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds. A suspension bridge takes walkers and cyclists across the Karamu Stream before passing by lush pasture land and through the industrial area of Whakatu.

Then it’s along the picturesque banks of the Clive River before the path emerges at the outskirts of Clive. Following a short ride along State Highway Two, cyclists can make their way onto the great coastal paths that wind around the edge of Hawke Bay and on to the wine growing areas of the region.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The official opening of the Hastings – Clive pathway follows on from the hugely successful opening of the Havelock Road pathway, where hundreds of people turned out for the Tour de iWay.”

Cynthia Bowers says “The Hastings – Clive pathway is one of the most picturesque rides on our iWay network. The path takes you past features of the district that you may never see from a car and the landscape along the Clive River is simply stunning.”

“A feature of this pathway is that while it is a fantastic ride for recreational cyclists, it will also allow workers who live in Hastings to ride to and from work in Clive or Whakatu. The new suspension bridge across the Karamu Stream has become a real talking point amongst walkers and cyclists who use this pathway” Cynthia Bowers says.

The official opening of the Hastings – Clive pathway will be held on Sunday October 7th at the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds. Participants are invited to arrive early to spend some time shopping or just browsing around the Farmers Market before joining the opening ceremony. Then it’s on your bike to enjoy the iWay Market Ride along the pathway. You can cycle as far as you want before returning to the showgrounds for the prizegiving at midday.

Mayor Lawrence Yule will officiate at the opening ceremony to be held on Sunday October 7th from 10.30am at the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds. Car parking will be available in the Farmers’ Market carpark.
