Wellington Police are seeking the driver of a stolen vehicle who fled from Police and then rammed a patrol vehicle late last night.

Tactical Response Manager Inspector Terry Van Dillen says a Toyota Hilux vehicle was stolen from an address in Highbury last night. Around 11:30pm, the vehicle then drove along the motorway and passed a Police patrol vehicle.

"The officer activated his lights and sirens and pursued the vehicle up the Gorge and onto the Newlands off-ramp, before the fleeing driver stopped and reserved the Hilux, ramming it into the Police vehicle."

Inspector Van Dillen says luckily no other vehicles were involved and the officer, a frontline Sergeant, was uninjured in the incident, however the vehicle received significant damage.

"Police later found the stolen vehicle abandoned in Newlands but are yet to identify and locate the fleeing driver. I urge this person to come forward and speak with us as soon as possible."

Anyone who knows the identity of this driver is also urged to contact Police on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
