A post mortem has been completed in Palmerston North and the body of Private Michael Ross is being returned to his family later today.

Private Ross, aged 29 years from Kaitaia, was lost overboard from an inflatable boat while on a training exercise on Lake Moawhango, near Waiouru, last week.  His body was recovered yesterday after an extensive search.

Ruapehu Area Police say the results of the post mortem will form part of the ongoing coronial inquiry.

“The death of this young man is an absolute tragedy for his family and friends.  Although we would have wished for a happier outcome, we’re relieved that the body of Private Ross has been found and that he can be returned to his grieving family.”
