Christchurch City Council today approved the Draft Sumner Village Centre Master Plan to go to the community for comment. The Plan has been prepared to support the recovery and rebuild of Sumner’s Village Centre in response to the damage caused by the earthquakes.

The Plan will be available from Thursday, 8 November in all the Council’s open service centres and libraries. The final date for written comments is 5pm on Wednesday, 12 December 2012.

Joint Advisory Group (JAG*) Chairman David Cox says that information and local knowledge gathered from community leaders, land and business owners, local residents and the Council have been the key drivers for the Plan.

“The JAG is very proud and most appreciative of the voluntary work put into this community-led Plan. It’s strength is that it will progressively deliver a Village Centre that is inspired by its coastal location, proud history and enthusiastic local people.

“It will not be quick, but it will be good. We now want to hear from the community to find out if the Plan delivers the things they want for their Village Centre,” he says.

Mayor Bob Parker says this is the only community-led master plan in the Council’s Suburban Centres Programme. The community and the Council can be proud of the work they have done in getting this Plan out for public comment.

“The Joint Advisory Group, in partnership with the Council, has facilitated a collaborative approach to the project, enabling the community’s voice to really come through in the Plan’s vision and actions. This Plan is all about creating a liveable, prosperous and vibrant heart for Sumner’s Village Centre and I urge people to comment,” he says.

The Council is holding drop-in sessions where people can view the Draft Master Plan, discuss its content with Council staff and make submissions.
