Re: START resounds with Kids in Town
Kids in Town free weekly lunchtime concerts are back at Re:START Mall from this Thursday 18 October 2012.
The Kids in Town programme, run by Christchurch City Council, gives primary school children the opportunity to gain valuable performing experience and provides great lunchtime entertainment for city workers, businesses and visitors to Central Christchurch.
Cultural groups, orchestras, choirs, dance groups, concert bands, jazz bands, rock bands and even a ukulele ensemble are among those performing. Two schools feature every week, with the first concert running from noon – 12.30pm and the second from 12.30pm – 1pm. The concerts are now back for the fourth term and run until the end of the year.
Richard Stokes Unit Manager Marketing says it’s great that the children are performing again in Re:START Mall.
“Central City is alive and well – there are buskers, exhibitions, pop-up services, cafes, punting and the gardens. And against this backdrop we have the Kids in Town programme providing free entertainment for workers and visitors each Thursday lunch-hour. If you haven’t been into the Central City for a while, it’s all happening here and well worth the trip.”
St Martins Primary School will be first up this week with a concert band, a recorder ensemble and a dance group. This will be followed by Mt Pleasant Primary with their choir, some rock bands and a Kapa haka cultural performance.
On Thursday 25 October South Hornby School choir will combine with 24 year six and seven children from their Adelaide Sister City school, Hawthorndene Primary. This is the tenth exchange since it began in 2003.
Other schools performing this term include Linwood, Heaton, Queenspark, Lyttelton, and Opawa Primary. If wet, Kids in Town will move to the level 1 foyer of the Christchurch City Council Civic Building at 53 Hereford Street. For a full schedule of the schools, event dates or weather updates visit the Council website, or follow Kids in Town on Facebook or Twitter.
