BAY OF PLENTY

Sport Bay of Plenty announced yesterday the finalists for the 2012 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, featuring a stellar line up of sporting talent from around the Bay, including three current Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students and two graduates.

The annual awards, organised each year by Sport Bay of Plenty, salute outstanding achievements by Bay of Plenty sportsmen and women, both at home and abroad, over the past year.

Amongst the many well-known names are a number of past and present Bay of Plenty Polytechnic High Performance Sports Scholarship recipients. These include Sam O’Dea who, along with younger brother Ben has been nominated for Open Team of the Year for their Beach Volleyball endeavours, Marshall Gibson (wrestling), Sam  Cane (rugby) and Joseph Millar (athletics) who have been nominated for Junior Sportsman of the Year and Monique Dekkers (judo) who has been nominated for Junior Sportswoman of the Year.

The six-strong judging panel spent many hours sorting through the 130 nominations for the awards. The winner(s) in each category will be announced at a gala awards evening at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre on Friday, 16 November.

“The calibre of nominations and the variety of sports never fails to amaze, and it is fantastic to see what Bay of Plenty athletes, coaches, officials and administrators are achieving on the world stage. I certainly don’t envy the judges who are charged with making the tough decisions and determining who the winners are” says Sport Bay of Plenty CEO Wayne Werder.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology share honours in supporting the annual Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, with Waiariki hosting this year’s event. The Polytechnic is also proud sponsor of the Secondary School Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year category awards.
